Acomplia (Zimulti, Rimonabant) information

Acomplia (20mg) Zimulti and Acomplia are brand names by Sanofi for Rimonabant: Acomplia is a brand name for Rimonabant in the UK and rest of Europe and Zimulti is a contemplated name for Rimonabant, intended for its launch in the US. It has not yet been made saleable in the US market (31-May-2007), but Acomplia was made saleable in Europe after an agreement made by the 25-member European Union in June 2006.

Acomplia (20mg) Acomplia is an anorectic diet pill indicated for the treatment of obesity. Acomplia works by blocking endogenous cannabinoid binding to neuronal CB1 receptors. Activation of these receptors by endoegenous cannabinoids, such as anadamide, increases appetite. Acomplia is a selective CB1 endocannabinoid receptor antagonist. It acts by obstructing these receptors. Thus resulting in reduced appetite. It is the most advanced endocannabinoid receptor antagonist in clinical development and offers a novel therapeutic approach to appetite control and weight reduction.

The drug also has potential as a treatment for smoking cessation because the endocannabinoid system is involved in the body's response to tobacco dependence.
