Proper use of Hydrocodone

The hydrocodone usually comes in combination with acetaminophen as a tablet, capsule, and liquid to take by mouth. It usually is taken every 4-6 hours as needed. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take hydrocodone exactly as directed.

  • Take hydrocodone with food or milk if it causes stomach upset.
  • Hydrocodone can be habit-forming. It is possible become physically and/or psychologically dependent on the medication. Do not take more than the prescribed amount of medication, take it more often or for a longer period than your doctor tells you to. Withdrawal effects may occur if hydrocodone is stopped suddenly after several weeks of continuous use. Your doctor may recommend a gradual reduction in dose.
