The oxycodone component is 14-hydroxydihydrocodeinone, a white, odorless,
crystalline powder having a saline, bitter taste. It is a semisynthetic narcotic
analgesic with multiple actions qualitatively similar to those of morphine.
Oxycodone is synthesized from the opium alkaloid thebaine. It is similar to
codeine, but is more potent and has a higher dependence potential. Also
Oxycodone is similar to methadone. The most prominent of these involve the
central nervous system (CNS) and organs composed of smooth muscle. Oxycodone HCl
are analgesia and sedation. When administered orally it retains at least
one-half of its analgesic activity. It is marketed in combination with aspirin
(Percodan) or acetaminophen (Percocet).
